Piste liikalihaville siniketuille – Sertifiointi kiristyy ja erillinen toimenpideohjelma otetaan käyttöön

12.10.2017

Suomi on Euroopan suurin ketuntuottaja.

”Teemme kaikki tarvittavat toimenpiteet, jotta Suomi on jatkossakin turkistuotannon huippumaa.

Press Release 12 October 2017

The fur industry puts a stop to obese blue foxes – Tightened certification, separate action plan into use

Over a period of twelve years, ProFur, the representative body for the Finnish fur industry, has built and developed a fur industry certification system in cooperation with breeders. Now the system is becoming more stringent. A separate action plan is also put into use.

“The industry is putting a stop to obese blue foxes. In practice, this means that in the future, breeders that are found to have obese blue foxes will lose their certification and their livelihood”, says Executive Director of ProFur, Marja Tiura.

The action plan includes feeding norms, body mass index and fitness classification. Strict weight restrictions will be set on blue foxes. Measures will be implement throughout the breeding period.

Industry field advisors and veterinary surgeons will visit every ProFur member fox farm during February and March, and each blue fox breeding male will be examined. The certification system for fur farms is constantly being improved and priorities are revised whenever necessary. Currently, the priorities are focused on lack of stimuli and worn cage structures that have been verified during sampling inspections.

Finland is Europe’s largest fox breeder. This position brings along larger responsibility and traceability requirements. In the future, the industry will be more scrutinised than before, both in Finland and abroad.

“We are taking all needed measures to ensure Finland’s position as a top fur producing country. I am pleased that our industry cooperates closely with the authorities. The authorities know our industry and they know the industry is doing its best to improve the wellbeing of its animals today and in the future”, Marja Tiura points out.
